There has been a confirmed case of Avian Influenza at Frosterley, County Durham, which is 10 km from Durham Hens. As we are on the edge of the 10km surveillance zone (the line cuts through the middle of our property), we are not able to sell hens, chicks, or fertile eggs until the restrictions are lifted.
These restrictions will have a profoundly detrimental effect on our business at a particularly busy time of year. Restrictions are usually in place for up to 10 weeks. During that time, our income will be significantly reduced and cash flow decimated, because the hens will still need to be housed, fed and cared for until they can be sold, hopefully, sometime in August. As the hens cannot be moved off our premises until then, the economic decision would be to cull them to reduce our losses, but we will not cull healthy hens.
